Umbúðasandur

Umbúðasandur is a coastal area located in the northeast of Iceland, near the town of Reykjahlíð on the shores of Lake Mývatn. It is a sandy beach, unusual for the volcanic landscape of the region. The name "Umbúðasandur" translates to "shelter sand" or "enclosure sand," suggesting a history of use as a place of refuge or containment.

Historically, Umbúðasandur has been significant as a gathering place for local farmers. During the spring, they would bring their sheep to this area for sorting and distribution after the winter months. This annual event, known as "sauðagæslur," was a crucial part of the agricultural cycle in the Mývatn area. The relatively flat and open terrain of Umbúðasandur made it suitable for managing large numbers of sheep.

While the traditional sheep sorting practices have largely diminished due to modern farming methods, Umbúðasandur remains a notable natural feature. It offers a stark contrast to the surrounding geothermal areas and lava fields, presenting a more gentle, sandy environment. The area is accessible and provides views of Lake Mývatn. Birdwatching is also a popular activity here, as the lake and its surroundings are rich in birdlife, including many waterfowl species. The unique combination of sandy terrain and its historical agricultural significance makes Umbúðasandur an interesting point of interest in the Mývatn region.
