Um2

Um2, short for Université Montpellier II, was a public university located in Montpellier, France. It was established in 1970 as part of the split of the historic University of Montpellier into three successor institutions: Université Montpellier I, Université Montpellier II (UM2), and Université Montpellier III. UM2 specialized in science and technology and health sciences, hosting faculties such as Sciences et Techniques, Medicine, and Pharmacy, along with related institutes and research units.

The university operated across multiple campuses in the Montpellier area, emphasizing both undergraduate and postgraduate education and active involvement in research. It maintained collaborations with national and regional research organizations and hosted numerous laboratories and research programs in disciplines spanning the natural and health sciences.

In 2015, UM2 merged with Université Montpellier I to form a single, consolidated institution, Université de Montpellier. As part of this reform of French higher education, the UM2 designation was retired, and the new university continued the teaching and research activities that had been conducted by UM2. The merger reflected a broader trend in France towards regrouping specialized universities into comprehensive institutions.

UM2 is remembered as a component of Montpellier’s modern university history, contributing to the city’s roles in science, medicine, and higher education. Its legacy persists in the ongoing work of the Université de Montpellier and in the academic programs and research that originated under UM2.
