Ultravioletkiirguse

Ultravioletkiirguse, often abbreviated as UV radiation, is a form of electromagnetic radiation that falls between visible light and X-rays in the electromagnetic spectrum. It is invisible to the human eye. Ultraviolet radiation is produced by the sun and is also emitted by artificial sources such as tanning beds and germicidal lamps. The sun is the primary source of UV radiation reaching Earth.

UV radiation is typically divided into three categories based on wavelength: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA rays have the longest wavelength and can penetrate the skin, contributing to aging and wrinkles. UVB rays have shorter wavelengths and are the primary cause of sunburn and skin damage, and they are also linked to skin cancer. UVC rays have the shortest wavelengths and are the most energetic, but they are almost entirely absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere and do not reach the surface.

Exposure to UV radiation can have both beneficial and harmful effects. Beneficial effects include the production of vitamin D in the skin, which is essential for bone health. However, excessive exposure to UV radiation can cause a range of health problems. These include sunburn, premature aging of the skin, cataracts, and an increased risk of skin cancer, including melanoma. Protective measures such as sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoiding peak sun hours are recommended to minimize harmful exposure.
