Ultrablock

Ultrablock is a trade name for a type of concrete masonry unit (CMU) that incorporates lightweight aggregates, often expanded shale, clay, or slate. This composition results in a block that is significantly lighter than traditional concrete blocks. The reduced weight offers several advantages during construction, including easier handling, reduced transportation costs, and less structural load on foundations and supporting elements.

The manufacturing process for Ultrablock is similar to that of standard CMUs, involving mixing cement, water, and aggregates, then molding and curing the mixture. The key difference lies in the selection and processing of the aggregates. The porous nature of expanded lightweight aggregates contributes to the block's reduced density.

In addition to weight reduction, Ultrablock can offer improved thermal insulation properties compared to denser concrete blocks. This is due to the air pockets within the lightweight aggregates, which help to slow heat transfer. The dimensional stability and fire resistance characteristics of standard CMUs are generally retained. Ultrablock is used in a variety of building applications, including load-bearing walls, partition walls, and veneer applications, particularly where weight reduction is a desirable attribute.
