Ullensvang

Ullensvang is a municipality located in Vestland county, Norway. It was established in 1913 when it was separated from the larger municipality of Kinsarvik. In 2020, Ullensvang was merged with the municipalities of Odda and Jondal, as well as a part of Kvinnherad, to form the new, larger municipality of Ullensvang. The administrative center of the municipality is the village of Lofthus.

The geography of Ullensvang is characterized by dramatic fjords and steep mountains. The Hardangerfjord, one of Norway's most famous fjords, runs through the municipality, offering stunning scenery. The region is also known for its fruit orchards, particularly apples and cherries, which are a significant part of the local economy and culture. The climate in Ullensvang is temperate, influenced by the proximity to the sea.

Historically, Ullensvang has been an area of settlement for centuries, with evidence of human activity dating back to the Stone Age. Agriculture and fishing were the primary livelihoods for a long time. The municipality is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors for its natural beauty, hiking opportunities, and cultural attractions. The Ullensvang Church, a medieval stone church, is a notable landmark. The municipality is also known for its association with Edvard Grieg, the Norwegian composer, who spent time in the area and found inspiration for some of his works, notably his "Haugtussa" song cycle based on poems by Arne Garborg, which often evokes the landscapes and spirit of Ullensvang.
