UV-säteilyaltistus refers to the exposure of living organisms and materials to ultraviolet radiation. This radiation originates primarily from the sun, but also from artificial sources like tanning beds and certain industrial lamps. UV radiation is categorized into three main types based on wavelength: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVC is largely absorbed by the Earth's ozone layer and is not a significant concern for surface exposure. UVA penetrates deeper into the skin than UVB and is primarily responsible for premature aging and contributes to skin cancer. UVB is the main cause of sunburn and also plays a significant role in the development of skin cancers.

The effects of UV-säteilyaltistus are varied. In humans, excessive exposure can lead to acute effects such as sunburn and photokeratitis (snow blindness), and chronic effects including skin aging, wrinkling, and an increased risk of all types of skin cancer, including melanoma. UV radiation also affects the eyes, potentially causing cataracts and other damage. On the other hand, controlled UV exposure is essential for the production of Vitamin D in the skin, which is vital for bone health and immune function.

Materials can also be degraded by UV radiation. Plastics, paints, and textiles can fade, become brittle, or lose their structural integrity when exposed to prolonged sunlight. Protective measures against excessive UV-säteilyaltistus include limiting sun exposure during peak hours, wearing protective clothing and hats, using sunscreen, and wearing UV-blocking sunglasses.
