UVresistance refers to the ability of materials, organisms, or systems to withstand damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It encompasses photochemical stability, resistance to photooxidative degradation, and retention of mechanical, optical, and functional properties under UV exposure.

In materials science, UV resistance is critical for plastics, polymers, coatings, textiles, and elastomers. UV light can initiate photo-oxidation that causes chain scission, crosslinking, embrittlement, color fading, and loss of gloss. Common strategies to improve UV resistance include incorporating UV absorbers (benzotriazoles, benzophenones), hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS), antioxidants, and stabilizing fillers. Additives are selected to balance cost, color, and mechanical performance. Standards and testing methods such as accelerated aging in UV chambers (ISO 4892 series, ASTM G154) or natural weathering tests evaluate color change, tensile properties, weight loss, and gloss over time.

In biology and ecology, UV resistance occurs in organisms such as bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals through DNA repair mechanisms, production of UV-absorbing compounds like melanin and flavonoids, and behavioral adaptations to avoid UV exposure. In humans, skin and ocular tissues have evolved protective strategies and use sunscreens to reduce UV damage; research on microbial and plant UV tolerance informs ecological risk assessments and crop protection.

Applications and implications: In outdoor products and infrastructure, UV resistance extends service life and reduces maintenance. Poor UV resistance increases failure risk and environmental waste. Trade-offs include potential impacts on color, safety, or cost. Evaluation relies on standardized weathering tests and real-world field studies.
