UVkovettava

UVkovettava is a term used to refer to a family of UV-curable materials and systems that polymerize rapidly upon exposure to ultraviolet light. In Finnish technical usage, UV-kovettava is the standard form, while UVkovettava appears in some texts and branding as a variant spelling. These systems are employed in coatings, inks, adhesives, and rapid-prototyping processes where a fast cure at ambient temperature is desirable.

The curing mechanism is based on photoinitiation: photoinitiators absorb UV radiation and generate reactive species that initiate polymerization of monomers, typically acrylates or methacrylates in free-radical systems, or epoxy resins in cationic systems. The choice of resin, photoinitiator class, and additives determines cure speed, depth of cure, and final properties. Typical formulations include acrylate resins, urethane acrylates, epoxy acrylates, and silicone-modified variants, along with pigments, stabilizers, and inhibitors.

Applications cover coatings for wood, metal, and glass; UV-curable inks for digital printing; adhesives for laminates and electronics; and resins used in 3D printing and dental or medical devices. Advantages include rapid cure at room temperature, reduced energy consumption, strong surface finishes, and low volatile organic compounds. Limitations involve surface-only cure at greater thickness due to oxygen inhibition, yellowing and brittleness in some systems, equipment requirements, and sensitivity to UV exposure during handling.
