UROC1
UROC1 is a human gene that encodes the enzyme urocanase, also known as urocanate hydratase. Urocanase catalyzes the hydration of urocanic acid to 4-imidazolone-5-propionate, the second step in the catabolism of the amino acid histidine. This reaction occurs in the cytosol as part of a conserved histidine degradation pathway that ultimately channels carbon from histidine into downstream intermediates used in nitrogen and folate metabolism.
Biological role and expression
The UROC1-encoded urocanase participates in the breakdown of histidine, working downstream of histidine ammonia-lyase (HAL), which
Mutations in UROC1 can lead to urocanase deficiency, a condition sometimes referred to as urocanic aciduria.
