UNESCOsáttmálar, or UNESCO Conventions, are legally binding international treaties adopted under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. These agreements aim to set international standards and promote cooperation among member states in areas falling within UNESCO's mandate, such as education, science, culture, and communication. When a country ratifies a UNESCO convention, it commits to implementing its provisions within its national legal framework and reporting on its progress to UNESCO.

These conventions cover a wide range of critical issues. For instance, the 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property seeks to protect cultural heritage from trafficking. The 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage aims to protect living cultural expressions and traditions. Other significant conventions address issues like the protection of underwater cultural heritage, the diversity of cultural expressions, and educational rights.

The process of developing a UNESCO convention typically involves extensive consultation with member states and experts. Once adopted by the UNESCO General Conference, conventions are opened for ratification by member states. The effectiveness of these agreements relies on the commitment of signatory nations to their implementation and on the monitoring mechanisms established by UNESCO. Through these legally binding instruments, UNESCO strives to foster a more peaceful and sustainable world by promoting shared values and collaborative action.
