UCLG

United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) is a global network of cities and local governments that represents the interests of subnational authorities in international forums. It coordinates advocacy on urban governance, decentralization, and sustainable development and provides a platform for knowledge exchange among members.

UCLG was established in 2004 through the merger of the International Union of Local Authorities (IULA) and the United Towns Organization (UTO), among other groups, to create a unified body representing local governments at the global level.

The organization operates through regional sections such as UCLG Africa, UCLG Europe, UCLG Latin America and the Caribbean, and UCLG Asia-Pacific. Its global secretariat is headquartered in Barcelona, Spain, and it maintains offices and partnerships worldwide.

UCLG conducts policy development, research, and advocacy on issues including climate change, urban planning, governance, and inclusive development. It organizes the World Summit of Local and Regional Leaders and provides capacity-building programs, exchange opportunities, and technical support for member local governments.

As a principal voice for subnational governments, UCLG collaborates with the United Nations and participates in the Global Taskforce of Local and Regional Governments to influence international agendas such as the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.
