U106

U106 refers to a German Type VIIC U-boat that served in the Kriegsmarine during World War II. It was commissioned on September 14, 1940, and was part of the 6th U-boat Flotilla for training purposes. From March 1941, U106 was assigned to the 2nd U-boat Flotilla and operated from Kiel.

The U-boat conducted nine war patrols during its service. Its operational area primarily included the North Atlantic and the waters around the British Isles. U106 is credited with sinking seven Allied merchant vessels, with a total tonnage of approximately 40,000 tons. It also damaged one additional vessel.

U106 was commanded by Kapitänleutnant Jürgen Oesten for most of its operational career. The U-boat had some notable successes, including sinking several ships in quick succession during its early patrols.

On October 22, 1941, U106 was sunk in the North Atlantic west of Ireland by depth charges from the British destroyer HMS Croome and the British corvette HMS Periwinkle. All 47 crew members aboard U106 were lost. The sinking marked the end of its active service in the war.
