Tüsistustele

Tüsistustele, also known as "tüsi" or "tüsi-telest," refers to a traditional Estonian folk custom involving the blessing of homes and families during the Christmas season. The practice is rooted in pre-Christian Estonian pagan traditions and has been adapted over time to incorporate Christian elements. The word "tüsistustele" translates roughly to "to bless the home" or "to purify the home," reflecting its primary purpose of warding off evil spirits and ensuring good fortune for the coming year.

The ritual typically takes place on Christmas Eve or the first days of Christmas, often involving a group of young people, usually unmarried, who visit homes in the community. They carry a decorated branch, often of pine or spruce, known as a "tüsi" or "tüsi-puu" (Christmas tree), which symbolizes life and protection. The visitors sing traditional songs, recite blessings, and sometimes perform small rituals to cleanse the home. In exchange for their services, they are given food, drink, or small gifts, such as money or sweets.

The origins of tüsistustele can be traced back to ancient Baltic and Finnic customs where fire and nature were central to spiritual practices. Over time, the tradition merged with Christian influences, particularly the idea of blessing homes for the new year.
