Tørlemekanismer refer to the biological processes and adaptations that allow organisms to survive periods of drought or water scarcity. These mechanisms are crucial for life in arid and semi-arid environments, as well as for organisms that may experience intermittent water availability.

One common strategy is avoidance. Some organisms can enter a dormant state, such as a seed or spore, waiting for favorable moisture conditions. Others migrate to areas with more water. Behavioral adaptations also play a role, including seeking shade, being active only during cooler parts of the day, or burrowing underground to escape the heat and find more humid microclimates.

Physiological adaptations are also widespread. Many organisms reduce water loss through transpiration or evaporation. Plants may develop small, waxy leaves, or close their stomata during dry periods. Animals might excrete more concentrated urine or feces, or reduce sweating. Some can tolerate a significant degree of dehydration, a state known as anhydrobiosis, where their metabolic activity slows down to nearly undetectable levels until water becomes available again.

Other mechanisms involve efficient water uptake and storage. Plants in arid regions often have extensive root systems to capture even small amounts of rainfall. Some animals can absorb water through their skin or specialized mouthparts. Succulent plants store water in their stems, leaves, or roots, allowing them to survive long droughts. The ability to metabolize stored fats and carbohydrates into metabolic water is another important adaptation for some desert animals.
