Törmäysvyöhykkeet, often referred to as collision zones, are regions on Earth's surface where two tectonic plates are converging. This convergence typically results in significant geological activity, including mountain building, earthquakes, and volcanic activity. The specific features of a collision zone depend on the types of plates involved.

When two continental plates collide, neither plate is easily subducted because they have similar densities. Instead, the crust buckles, folds, and faults, leading to the formation of extensive mountain ranges. The Himalayas, formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, are a prime example of this process. These zones are characterized by thick crustal deformation and widespread, shallow earthquakes.

In contrast, when an oceanic plate collides with a continental plate, the denser oceanic plate subducts beneath the continental plate. This subduction process generates a deep oceanic trench offshore and triggers volcanic activity on the overriding continental plate, forming volcanic mountain chains like the Andes. Earthquakes in these zones can range from shallow to very deep.

Collision zones are dynamic environments that continuously reshape the Earth's crust.
