Tömegegyensúlyon, meaning mass balance, is a fundamental principle in chemistry and engineering used to track the conservation of mass in a system. It states that for any process, the total mass of the reactants must equal the total mass of the products, assuming no mass is lost or gained from the surroundings. This principle is particularly important in chemical reactions where atoms are rearranged but not created or destroyed.

When applying mass balance, a boundary is defined around the system being studied. All inputs and outputs of mass across this boundary are accounted for. The general equation for mass balance is: Input + Generation = Output + Accumulation. In steady-state systems, where the amount of mass within the system does not change over time, the accumulation term is zero, simplifying the equation to Input + Generation = Output.

In chemical engineering, mass balance calculations are crucial for process design, optimization, and troubleshooting. They help determine reaction yields, identify losses, and ensure efficient material utilization. This principle applies to various scales, from laboratory experiments to large industrial plants, and forms the basis for understanding and controlling chemical transformations.
