Tätortsgräns refers to the boundary defining a "tätort," which is a Swedish term for a contiguous urban area. In Sweden, Statistics Sweden (Statistiska centralbyrån, SCB) is responsible for defining and demarcating tätorter. These definitions are primarily for statistical purposes to provide a standardized measure of urban settlement. A tätort is defined as an area with at least 200 inhabitants where the distance between the houses is no more than 200 meters. The tätortsgräns is the line that separates the built-up area of a tätort from the surrounding less densely populated land, such as open countryside, agricultural land, or separate smaller settlements. The delineation aims to capture the continuous built environment and exclude any significant breaks in development. These boundaries are revised periodically by SCB, typically every five years, to reflect changes in urban expansion and development. The tätortsgräns is crucial for various planning and administrative functions, including urban planning, infrastructure development, and socio-economic analysis.
