Työriida

Työriida, also written työriita, is the Finnish term for a labor dispute, a conflict between employers and employees or their representatives over terms and conditions of employment. It typically arises when collective bargaining between employers and labor unions fails to produce an agreement or when there is disagreement about the interpretation or application of an existing collective agreement or labor law.

Participants commonly include trade unions, employers' associations, and, in some cases, individual workers represented by unions. The dispute can take several forms, the most well-known being strikes by employees and lockouts by employers; other actions such as work-to-rule or overtime bans may also be used.

For resolution, parties often attempt negotiations and may involve mediation by public authorities or independent bodies. If negotiations do not yield a settlement, the dispute may be settled through arbitration or by a court or labour tribunal, depending on the jurisdiction. The outcome is typically a binding agreement or decision that governs terms of employment for a period of time.

Työriidan processes are integral to industrial relations in many economies. They aim to balance the interests of workers and employers, protect workers' rights, and maintain continuity of essential services while providing a framework for resolving disagreements peacefully.
