Tympanometrii

Tympanometry is an audiological test that measures the function of the middle ear. It assesses the movement of the tympanic membrane (eardrum) and the pressure within the middle ear space. The test is non-invasive and typically takes only a few minutes to complete.

During tympanometry, a small probe is inserted into the ear canal. This probe emits a sound and simultaneously measures how much of that sound is reflected back from the eardrum. The probe also delivers varying air pressure into the ear canal, which causes the eardrum to move. The device records the eardrum's compliance (how easily it moves) at different pressure levels.

The results of a tympanometry test are displayed as a graph called a tympanogram. Different shapes and patterns on the tympanogram can indicate various conditions affecting the middle ear. For example, a flat tympanogram might suggest a blocked eardrum, fluid in the middle ear, or ossicular discontinuity. A tympanogram with a peak far to the negative side of the pressure scale can indicate a retracted eardrum or Eustachian tube dysfunction.

Tympanometry is a valuable tool for diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as middle ear infections (otitis media), fluid behind the eardrum, perforations of the eardrum, and problems with the Eustachian tube. It is often performed on infants and children as part of a comprehensive hearing evaluation, as it can help identify conductive hearing loss. The test does not measure hearing sensitivity but rather the physical properties of the middle ear system.
