Työterveyslain

Työterveyslaki (Occupational Health Act) is a Finnish law that aims to promote employees' health and safety in the workplace. Enacted in 1978 and amended several times since, it forms a key part of Finland’s occupational safety and health legislation, ensuring that working conditions are safe and healthy for all employees.

The law requires employers to provide their employees with occupational health care services. These services are designed to prevent work-related illnesses, injuries, and other health risks. The law mandates that employers must cooperate with occupational health care professionals to assess workplace hazards, implement preventive measures, and monitor employees' health. Occupational health care may include regular health checks, ergonomic assessments, and guidance on work-related health issues.

Employers are also obligated to report work-related accidents and diseases to the authorities, ensuring proper documentation and follow-up. The law emphasizes the importance of workplace safety culture, encouraging employers and employees to work together in maintaining a healthy work environment.

Työterveyslaki applies to all workplaces in Finland, including both private and public sector organizations. It complements other occupational safety laws, such as the Occupational Safety and Health Act (Työturvallisuuslaki), to create a comprehensive framework for workplace safety. Violations of the law can result in penalties, reinforcing its role in protecting workers' well-being.

The law is administered by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (Työterveyslaitos) and other relevant authorities, which provide guidance, inspections, and enforcement to ensure compliance. Occupational health care services are often provided by external occupational health care centers, though some larger organizations may have their own in-house facilities.
