Turvalaseina

Turvalaseina is a Finnish term used to describe safety glazing products and protective lenses designed to reduce the risk of injury from impact, breakage, heat, or hazards. In practice, the term covers both architectural safety glass and eyewear lenses used in protective equipment.

The two main forms are tempered safety glass and laminated safety glass. Tempered glass is heat-treated to increase strength and fragments into small, less dangerous granules when broken. Laminated glass consists of multiple glass layers bonded with an interlayer, typically polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ionoplast, which holds shards in place and maintains a barrier even after impact.

In eyewear, turvalaseina refers to lenses made from polycarbonate or other impact-resistant materials that comply with safety standards. Protective lenses may include coatings for scratch resistance, UV protection, or anti-fog performance. Compliance is typically demonstrated to standards such as ANSI Z87.1 in the United States and EN 166 in Europe.

Applications span architectural glazing for façades, skylights, and interior partitions; vehicle glazing such as windshields and windows; as well as protective equipment like safety goggles, face shields, and laboratory or industrial eye protection.

Manufacturing considerations include material choice, interlayer type, thickness, edge treatment, and coatings. Proper installation and framing are essential to ensure the glass remains a safe barrier in case of impact.
