Turkish origin is a term used to describe ancestry or heritage associated with Turkish people or with origins in Turkey or among Turkish-speaking communities. It is used in genealogy, demographics, and cultural discussions to indicate background tied to Turkey and the wider Turkic world.

Historically, the concept relates to populations in the region of Anatolia and the areas of the former Ottoman Empire, where Turkish-speaking communities formed the basis of the modern Turkish nation after the Republic’s founding in 1923. It can refer to people who identify as ethnically Turkish, as well as those born in Turkey or descendants living abroad.

The term does not denote a single legal status. Citizenship in Turkey is separate from ethnic origin; individuals of Turkish origin may be citizens of Turkey or citizens of other countries. Turkish origin can be claimed by people with mixed heritage, including Turkish and non-Turkish ancestors such as Kurds, Armenians, or Arabs.

Language is commonly associated with Turkish origin, since Turkish is the dominant language of Turkey and many Turkish-speaking communities. However, not all people of Turkish origin are monolingual, and language alone is not a definitive indicator of origin.

In diaspora populations, identifying as being of Turkish origin forms part of personal and communal identity. Regions with sizable Turkish-origin communities include Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, France, Sweden, and the United States, reflecting historical labor migration, family ties, and settlement patterns.
