Turdan

Turdan refers to a type of nomadic tent dwelling traditionally used by various Turkic and Mongolic peoples. These portable shelters are characterized by their circular or oval shape, constructed from a collapsible wooden lattice frame covered with felt or animal hides. The term itself is often used interchangeably with related structures like yurts, gers, or khans, though regional variations in design and construction exist.

The design of a turdan is optimized for portability and durability, essential for the semi-nomadic lifestyle of its users. The lattice allows for flexibility, while the felt covering provides excellent insulation against extreme temperatures, keeping inhabitants warm in winter and cool in summer. A central opening at the apex of the roof, known as a *tono* or smoke hole, serves as ventilation and a chimney for internal fires.

Historically, turdans have been central to the culture and survival of peoples inhabiting the steppes of Central Asia, including groups like the Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and Mongols. Their efficient design has allowed for a mobile way of life, enabling these communities to follow migratory routes for grazing livestock. While modern housing has become more prevalent, the turdan remains an important cultural symbol and is still used in some rural and nomadic communities, often for special occasions or as a traditional dwelling.
