Turbólyuk

Turbólyuk is a Hungarian term that translates to "turbohole" or "turbothrust." It refers to a phenomenon observed in turbocharged internal combustion engines. Specifically, it describes a delay in the engine's response when the throttle is suddenly opened.

When the throttle is abruptly pressed, the engine needs to generate more power. This requires an increase in the amount of air and fuel supplied. In a turbocharged engine, the turbocharger is responsible for forcing more air into the cylinders, thereby increasing power output. However, the turbocharger itself is driven by exhaust gases and takes some time to spin up to its optimal speed. This spool-up period results in a lag between the driver's input and the engine's full power delivery.

The duration of the turbólyuk can vary significantly depending on the engine design, the size and efficiency of the turbocharger, and the engine's operating conditions. Modern engine management systems and advanced turbocharger designs, such as variable geometry turbos (VGTs) or twin-scroll turbos, have been developed to minimize this effect. These technologies aim to reduce the time it takes for the turbocharger to build boost pressure, leading to a more immediate and responsive throttle feel. While often seen as a drawback, some enthusiasts appreciate the characteristic surge of power when the turbo finally spools up.
