Tuntohermopäät

Tuntohermopäät, also known as cutaneous nerve endings or sensory receptors, are specialized structures in the skin that detect various types of stimuli. They are responsible for our sense of touch, pressure, vibration, temperature, and pain. These microscopic structures are crucial for our interaction with the environment and for maintaining bodily integrity.

There are several types of Tuntohermopäät, each adapted to a specific sensory modality. For instance, Meissner's corpuscles are sensitive to light touch and vibration, particularly in areas with high tactile sensitivity like fingertips and lips. Pacinian corpuscles, on the other hand, are deeper in the skin and detect deep pressure and rapid vibrations. Merkel's discs are found in the epidermis and are responsible for sustained light touch and pressure. Free nerve endings are the most numerous and detect pain, temperature, and crude touch. Ruffini endings are located in the dermis and are sensitive to sustained pressure and skin stretching.

This activation generates an electrical signal, which is then transmitted along the sensory nerves to the spinal cord and eventually to the brain. The brain interprets these signals, allowing us to perceive and react to the external world.
