Tunnelointitodennäköisyydelle is a Finnish term that translates to "tunneling probability" in English. It refers to the likelihood that a quantum mechanical particle can pass through a potential energy barrier, even if its classical energy is lower than the barrier's height. This phenomenon is a direct consequence of the wave-like nature of particles in quantum mechanics, as described by the Schrödinger equation.

In classical physics, a particle encountering a barrier higher than its kinetic energy would be reflected. However, in quantum mechanics, the particle's wavefunction, which represents the probability of finding the particle at a certain location, does not abruptly drop to zero at the barrier. Instead, it decays exponentially within the barrier. If the barrier is sufficiently thin, there is a non-zero probability that the wavefunction will have a finite amplitude on the other side of the barrier, meaning the particle can "tunnel" through.

The tunneling probability depends on several factors, including the height and width of the potential barrier, and the mass of the particle. A higher and wider barrier, or a more massive particle, leads to a lower tunneling probability. Conversely, thinner barriers and lighter particles increase the probability of tunneling.

Examples include radioactive decay, where alpha particles tunnel out of the atomic nucleus, and the operation of scanning tunneling microscopes, which utilize electron tunneling to image surfaces at the atomic level.
