Tulekindlate
Tulekindlate, also known as tule kindling, are small, thin sticks of wood that are used to start a fire. They are typically made from the inner bark of certain tree species, such as willow or aspen, which are easily combustible. The term "tule" refers to the California chaparral, a type of shrubland, and "kindling" refers to the small sticks used to ignite larger pieces of wood. Tulekindlate are commonly used in outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and survival situations, as they are lightweight, easy to carry, and can be used to start fires quickly. They are also used in some traditional fire-making techniques, such as the hand drill method, where a small fire is built using tulekindlate and then gradually expanded with larger pieces of wood. The use of tulekindlate has been documented in various cultures around the world, including Native American tribes in the United States and indigenous peoples in other parts of the globe.
