Konstantin Eduardovich Tsyolkovsky, sometimes transliterated as Tsiolkovsky (1857–1935), was a Russian scientist and a pivotal figure in the development of astronautics. Born in Izhevskoye in the Russian Empire, he was largely self-taught and spent much of his life as a schoolteacher and writer in Kaluga. His theoretical work and public advocacy established many of the basic ideas that would later underlie practical rocketry.
