Tsitraat

Tsitraat is a term primarily used in Maltese to refer to citrus fruits, particularly lemons. The word itself is derived from the Italian word "cetriolo," which historically could refer to a type of melon or cucumber, but in Maltese usage, it evolved to encompass a broader category of citrus.

While "tsitraat" can be a general term for citrus, it most commonly refers to the lemon (Citrus limon). Lemons are widely cultivated and consumed in Malta, used in cooking, beverages, and traditional remedies. The Maltese word for orange is usually "larinġ," and for grapefruit, it's "grejpfrut," although "tsitraat" can sometimes be used informally to encompass these as well.

The fruit's tartness and refreshing quality make it a staple in Maltese cuisine. It is frequently squeezed over fish dishes, used in desserts like imqaret (a date-filled pastry), and added to drinks such as traditional lemonade. The zest of the tsitraat is also utilized for its aromatic oils, adding depth to various recipes.
