Tsemenditööstus

Tsemenditööstus is the Estonian term for the cement industry. It encompasses the mining of raw materials, manufacturing of cement, and its distribution. The primary raw materials used in cement production are limestone and clay, which are quarried and then crushed and ground into a fine powder. This powder is then heated in a kiln to very high temperatures, a process called clinkerization, which transforms the materials into clinker. The clinker is then cooled and ground with gypsum and other additives to produce cement.

Cement is a crucial binder in construction, used to make concrete and mortar. Its production is an energy-intensive process, requiring significant amounts of heat and electricity. Historically, cement production has been a significant industrial activity in Estonia, contributing to the nation's infrastructure development.

The environmental impact of tsemenditööstus is a key consideration. Emissions, particularly carbon dioxide from the calcination of limestone and from fuel combustion, are a major concern. Modern cement plants employ technologies to reduce these emissions and improve energy efficiency. The industry also faces challenges related to raw material availability and competition.
