Tsütostaatiliselt refers to a method of treatment that inhibits cell growth and division, primarily used in the context of cancer therapy. This term originates from the Greek words "kytos" (cell) and "statos" (standing still or stopping). Cytostatic agents work by interfering with the cell cycle, preventing cells from proliferating. This mechanism is particularly effective against rapidly dividing cells, which are characteristic of malignant tumors.

There are various types of cytostatic drugs, each with distinct mechanisms of action. Some drugs, for example, target DNA replication or synthesis, thereby halting cell division. Others may interfere with the formation of microtubules, essential structures for cell division. Chemotherapy is the most common application of cytostatic agents, where a combination of drugs is administered to attack cancer cells through different pathways.

While cytostatic treatments are crucial for managing many cancers, they are not without side effects. Because these drugs target all rapidly dividing cells, healthy tissues with high cell turnover, such as hair follicles, bone marrow, and the lining of the digestive tract, can also be affected. This can lead to common side effects like hair loss, reduced blood cell counts, and gastrointestinal issues. The development of more targeted therapies aims to minimize these non-specific effects and improve treatment outcomes.
