Trichloroethane

Trichloroethane refers to two distinct chemical compounds: 1,1,1-trichloroethane and 1,1,2-trichloroethane.

1,1,1-Trichloroethane, also known as methyl chloroform, is a chlorinated hydrocarbon that was widely used as a solvent and degreaser. Its low toxicity and effectiveness made it popular in industries for cleaning electronics, metal parts, and in dry cleaning. However, due to its significant ozone-depleting potential, its production and use were phased out under the Montreal Protocol. It is a volatile organic compound.

1,1,2-Trichloroethane is a less common isomer of trichloroethane. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor. Unlike its 1,1,1-isomer, 1,1,2-trichloroethane is more toxic and less volatile. It has found limited use as a solvent and as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals, particularly vinylidene chloride. Its environmental persistence and potential health effects have led to restrictions on its use and handling. Both isomers are denser than water and have low solubility in it.
