TravancoreCochin

Travancore-Cochin, officially known as the State of Travancore-Cochin, was a former state in India formed in 1949. It was created by the merger of the princely states of Travancore and Cochin. The new state was a part of the Dominion of India. The capital of Travancore-Cochin was Trivandrum.

The linguistic reorganization of states in India led to the renaming of Travancore-Cochin to Kerala on November 1, 1956. This reorganization was based on linguistic lines, and the Malayalam-speaking regions of Travancore-Cochin, along with the Malabar district of Madras Presidency and the Kasargod taluk of South Canara, were unified to form the state of Kerala. The Tamil-speaking southern region of Travancore was merged with Madras Presidency to form the new state of Tamil Nadu.

The period of Travancore-Cochin was relatively short, lasting for about seven years. However, it was a significant period in the administrative and political history of the region, as it marked a step towards the formation of the modern state of Kerala. The state was governed by a Rajpramukh, who was previously the Maharaja of Travancore. The legislative assembly had representatives from both former states. Economic and social policies during this time aimed at integration and development across the merged territories.
