Transzmutálja

Transzmutálja is a Hungarian term that translates to "transmute" in English. It refers to the process of changing one element into another, typically through nuclear reactions. This concept is central to nuclear chemistry and physics, where transmutation can occur naturally or artificially.

In natural processes, transmutation happens through radioactive decay, where an unstable nucleus emits particles and transforms into a different element. For example, uranium-238 decays into thorium-234, and then into protactinium-234, and so on, until it reaches a stable isotope like lead-206.

Artificial transmutation involves bombarding a target nucleus with high-energy particles, such as protons, neutrons, or other nuclei, to induce a change in its composition. This process is used in nuclear reactors and particle accelerators to produce new elements or isotopes. For instance, when a uranium-238 nucleus captures a neutron, it can become uranium-239, which then decays into neptunium-239 and eventually plutonium-239.

Transmutation has significant applications in various fields, including medicine, where radioactive isotopes are used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, and in industry, where it is employed in the production of materials for nuclear energy and other technologies.
