Transzgender

Transgender is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Gender identity is a person's internal sense of being male, female, both, neither, or somewhere else along the gender spectrum. This is distinct from sex assigned at birth, which is typically determined by external genitalia.

Not all transgender people transition or wish to transition. Transitioning can be a multifaceted process that may involve social, legal, and medical steps. Social transition involves changing one's name, pronouns, and gender expression to align with their gender identity. Legal transition may include changing one's name and gender marker on official documents. Medical transition can involve hormone therapy and/or surgeries, but these are not required for someone to be considered transgender.

The transgender community is diverse, encompassing individuals of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Transgender identities are not a mental illness, although some transgender individuals may experience mental health challenges related to societal stigma, discrimination, or the process of transition. Understanding and respecting an individual's gender identity, including using their correct name and pronouns, is crucial.
