Transmembranous proteins, often referred to as transmembrane proteins, are a class of proteins that are embedded within or span across biological membranes. These proteins play crucial roles in cellular function, acting as channels, transporters, receptors, and enzymes. Their structure is characterized by hydrophobic regions that interact with the lipid bilayer of the membrane and hydrophilic regions that are exposed to the aqueous environment on either side of the membrane.

There are several types of transmembrane proteins based on their interaction with the membrane. Integral membrane proteins are permanently attached to the lipid bilayer and can only be removed by disrupting the membrane with detergents. Peripheral membrane proteins, in contrast, are temporarily associated with the membrane surface or with integral membrane proteins, and can be released by milder treatments like changes in pH or salt concentration. Some integral proteins are transmembrane proteins that span the entire membrane, while others are embedded within only one leaflet of the bilayer.

The functions of transmembrane proteins are diverse and essential for life. Ion channels and transporters facilitate the movement of ions and molecules across the membrane, regulating cellular potential and nutrient uptake. Receptor proteins bind to extracellular signaling molecules, initiating intracellular signal transduction pathways that control a wide range of cellular processes. Enzymes located within the membrane can catalyze reactions necessary for cellular metabolism. The proper functioning and localization of transmembrane proteins are vital for maintaining cell integrity and communication.
