Transmembranaipäätteitä, also known as transmembrane proteins, are proteins that are embedded within or span across cell membranes. These proteins play crucial roles in cellular function, acting as channels, transporters, receptors, or enzymes. Their structure typically includes hydrophobic regions that interact with the lipid bilayer of the membrane and hydrophilic regions that face the aqueous environments inside and outside the cell.

Transmembrane proteins can be classified based on their mode of insertion into the membrane. Integral transmembrane proteins are permanently associated with the membrane and can only be removed by disrupting the lipid bilayer. Peripheral membrane proteins, on the other hand, are transiently associated with the membrane and can be removed by milder treatments.

The functions of these proteins are diverse and essential for life. For instance, ion channels facilitate the movement of ions across the membrane, crucial for nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction. Transporter proteins move specific molecules, such as glucose or amino acids, into or out of the cell. Receptor proteins bind to signaling molecules, initiating intracellular responses. Some transmembrane proteins also act as enzymes, catalyzing reactions at the membrane surface. Their proper functioning is vital for maintaining cellular integrity and communication.
