Transitiefuncties, also known as transfer functions, are a fundamental concept in control theory and signal processing. They represent the relationship between the input and output of a linear time-invariant (LTI) system. Essentially, a transfer function describes how a system transforms an input signal into an output signal without considering the internal state of the system.

In the mathematical domain, transfer functions are typically expressed in the Laplace domain (s-domain) or the z-domain for discrete-time systems. They are defined as the ratio of the Laplace transform of the output signal to the Laplace transform of the input signal, assuming all initial conditions are zero. For a system with input x(t) and output y(t), the transfer function H(s) is given by Y(s) / X(s).

The poles and zeros of a transfer function provide crucial information about the system's behavior, including its stability, frequency response, and transient response characteristics. Poles are the values of 's' for which the transfer function becomes infinite, while zeros are the values of 's' for which the transfer function becomes zero. The location of these poles and zeros in the complex plane dictates the system's dynamic properties.

Transfer functions are widely used for system analysis, design, and simulation. They allow engineers to easily analyze the stability of a system, predict its response to various inputs, and design controllers to achieve desired performance.
