A Tracheostomiesonde, often referred to as a tracheostomy tube or simply a trach tube, is a medical device that is inserted into the trachea (windpipe) through a surgical incision in the neck. This procedure is known as a tracheostomy. The primary purpose of a tracheostomiesonde is to establish and maintain an open airway. It is used when a patient cannot breathe adequately on their own due to various medical conditions. These conditions can include severe airway obstruction, respiratory failure requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation, or certain neurological conditions that impair the ability to cough and clear secretions.

The tracheostomiesonde bypasses the upper airway, which can be obstructed by swelling, trauma, or secretions. It allows for direct access to the lungs, facilitating easier suctioning of mucus and other debris. Many tracheostomiesondes are equipped with a cuff, an inflatable balloon at the end of the tube, which seals the airway and directs airflow to and from the lungs, preventing aspiration of food or fluids into the lungs. Some tracheostomiesondes are fenestrated, meaning they have small holes that allow air to pass through the vocal cords, potentially enabling speech. The duration of tracheostomiesonde use can vary from short-term, while a patient recovers from an acute illness, to long-term, for individuals with chronic respiratory conditions. Regular care and maintenance of the tracheostomiesonde are essential to prevent complications such as infection, airway blockage, or injury to the trachea.
