Trabekuláris

Trabekuláris is an adjective used in Hungarian to describe tissues or structures that contain or resemble a network of trabeculae—small, beam-like elements forming a porous framework. The term is common in anatomy, pathology, and related medical fields.

In bone biology, trabekuláris (trabecular) bone, also called cancellous or spongy bone, forms a three-dimensional lattice of trabeculae. This porous network provides lightweight structural support, increases the bone’s surface area for metabolic activity, and houses bone marrow. The architecture is dynamic and adapts to mechanical loading through remodeling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Degeneration or loss of trabeculae, as seen in osteoporosis or certain metabolic diseases, weakens the bone and raises fracture risk.

In ophthalmology, the trabeculáris hálózat refers to the trabecular meshwork, a porous tissue at the iridocorneal angle that drains aqueous humor from the anterior chamber into Schlemm’s canal. Proper function maintains intraocular pressure, while age-related stiffening or obstruction can increase resistance to outflow and contribute to glaucoma. Treatments for elevated pressure include medications that reduce production or increase outflow, laser therapy, and surgical procedures that enhance drainage or create new pathways.

Beyond clinical contexts, the trabecular network is a focus of imaging and biomechanical research. Techniques such as micro-computed tomography and finite-element analysis help quantify trabecular density, thickness, and connectivity, informing studies of bone quality, skeletal diseases, and implant design.
