It consists of three main layers: the lipid layer, the aqueous layer, and the mucin layer. The lipid layer, secreted by the meibomian glands, forms the outermost surface and prevents rapid evaporation of the tear film. The aqueous layer, produced by the lacrimal glands, is the thickest layer and provides moisture, nutrients, and oxygen to the cornea. The mucin layer, secreted by goblet cells, adheres to the corneal surface and helps to spread and stabilize the aqueous layer.
