Tränenfilmgesundheit refers to the overall well-being and proper functioning of the tear film that covers the surface of the eye. The tear film is a complex, multi-layered fluid that plays a crucial role in maintaining ocular health and clear vision. It consists of three main layers: the lipid layer, the aqueous layer, and the mucin layer. The lipid layer, secreted by the meibomian glands, forms the outermost surface and prevents rapid evaporation of the tear film. The aqueous layer, produced by the lacrimal glands, is the thickest layer and provides moisture, nutrients, and oxygen to the cornea. The mucin layer, secreted by goblet cells, adheres to the corneal surface and helps to spread and stabilize the aqueous layer.

A healthy tear film is essential for several functions. It lubricates the eye, reducing friction between the eyelids and the cornea during blinking. It washes away debris and foreign particles, protecting the eye from infection. It nourishes the avascular cornea, providing oxygen and essential nutrients. Furthermore, a smooth and stable tear film is critical for clear and sharp vision, as any irregularities can lead to blurred eyesight.

Disruptions to tear film health can result in various conditions, most notably dry eye disease. Dry eye can be caused by insufficient tear production, excessive evaporation, or an imbalance in the tear film composition. Symptoms can include stinging, burning, grittiness, redness, blurred vision, and a feeling of something being in the eye. Maintaining good tear film health often involves addressing underlying causes, such as environmental factors, medical conditions, or medication side effects, and may include treatments like artificial tears, prescription eye drops, or lifestyle modifications.
