Toårige

Toårige refers to plants that complete their life cycle within two years. This life cycle typically involves germination and vegetative growth in the first year, followed by flowering, seed production, and death in the second year. Many common garden plants are biennials.

During their first year, toårige plants focus on developing a strong root system and producing foliage. They often appear as a rosette of leaves close to the ground. Overwintering is crucial for these plants, as they need the chilling period to trigger flowering. In their second year, the plant shifts its energy to reproduction. It sends up a flowering stalk, produces flowers, and then develops seeds. Once seed production is complete, the plant usually dies.

Examples of well-known toårige plants include foxglove (Digitalis), hollyhock (Alcea), and parsley (Petroselinum crispum). Carrots (Daucus carota) and onions (Allium cepa) also exhibit biennial growth habits in the wild or when allowed to go to seed. However, in cultivation, they are often harvested in their first year before they can flower. Understanding the biennial nature of a plant is important for gardeners to ensure proper care and to allow for natural self-seeding if desired. Sometimes, toårige plants are treated as annuals if they are not allowed to complete their full two-year cycle.
