Torvish

Torvish is a constructed language designed for the fictional Torvan world. It was created by contributors to the Torva project, a collaborative body producing novels, role-playing materials, and art. The language is intended to convey a distinct cultural texture—mythic, maritime, and forested—while remaining approachable to learners. In-world, Torvish is spoken across coastal settlements and inland villages, and it serves as a vehicle for lore and dialogue.

Phonology and script: Torvish has a compact phoneme inventory. Consonants include p, t, k, m, n, s, l, r, and a voiced glottal approximant w; vowels are a, e, i, o, u. Stress tends to fall on the penultimate syllable. The language uses a Latin-based alphabet with diacritics in some texts; a ceremonial runic script is also depicted in art and inscriptions.

Grammar: Torvish favors a subject–verb–object order in simple clauses. It is moderately analytic, with affixal morphology for pronouns and agreement. Nouns distinguish singular and plural and carry suffixal case markings (nominative, accusative, dative). Adjectives follow nouns and agree in number. Verbs mark aspect and mood through suffixes; negation is handled with a particle placed before the verb.

History and status: In the fictional chronology, Torvish evolved from an older Torvan tongue and was standardized during a period of cultural revival. It appears in songs, mythic texts, and contemporary fiction within the Torva canon. Outside the fiction, communities maintain grammars, dictionaries, and audio recordings to teach and study the language.
