Tordesillas

Tordesillas is a municipality in the province of Valladolid, within the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. It lies along the Duero River, about 30 kilometers west of Valladolid city, and has a historic center that reflects its medieval origins, with streets and buildings arranged around a river crossing and a defensive site.

Historically, Tordesillas gained international prominence in the late 15th century. In 1494 the Treaty of Tordesillas was signed here by the Crown of Castile and the Crown of Portugal with papal mediation by Alexander VI. The treaty divided the non-European world between the two powers along a meridian roughly 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands, shaping the subsequent course of exploration and colonization in the Americas for centuries. The town also developed as an administrative and cultural center for the surrounding region, with ties to noble families and the royal court in various periods.
