Tootjahinnaindeks

Tootjahinnaindeks is a statistical measure that tracks changes in the prices received by domestic producers for the goods and services they produce. It is a production-side price index, often called the producer price index, and is distinct from consumer price indices that track household purchases.

The index coverage spans multiple industry sectors and is usually compiled by a national statistics office. Data are collected on prices charged for outputs at the producer level and organized by product groups within a standard classification. Values are typically indexed to a base year, with changes shown as percentage movements. In many systems it is published monthly or quarterly and may be seasonally adjusted or chain-linked.

Uses of tootjahinnaindeks include monitoring inflationary pressures from production, informing monetary and fiscal policy, and providing input for business planning and contract escalation. It also helps analyze price dynamics in sectors such as manufacturing, mining, and energy.

Limitations include that it reflects producer prices rather than consumer prices, so it may not represent the cost of living. It is sensitive to product mix, changes in quality, and data revisions. As with other price indices, methodological choices such as base year, weighting, and classification affect its movements.
