Tonicitetsbegreppet, or the concept of tonicity, refers to the relative solute concentration of a solution compared to another solution, typically a cell's cytoplasm. It is a crucial concept in biology and medicine, particularly when discussing the movement of water across cell membranes. Solutions are classified based on their tonicity, which dictates how water will move via osmosis.

An isotonic solution has the same solute concentration as the cell. In such a solution, there is no net movement of water across the cell membrane, and the cell maintains its normal shape. A hypertonic solution has a higher solute concentration than the cell. When a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution, water will move out of the cell by osmosis, causing the cell to shrink or crenate. Conversely, a hypotonic solution has a lower solute concentration than the cell. In a hypotonic solution, water will move into the cell by osmosis, causing the cell to swell and potentially burst (lysis).

Understanding tonicity is vital for various biological processes, including maintaining cell volume and fluid balance. In medicine, it is critical for administering intravenous fluids, as the tonicity of the fluid must be carefully considered to avoid damaging blood cells. For example, saline solutions used for medical purposes are often isotonic to human blood plasma. The concept also applies to the function of various organs and tissues, such as the kidneys in regulating water balance.
