In essence, Tonelli's theorems provide an algorithm to find the square roots of a quadratic residue modulo a prime. A quadratic residue modulo a prime p is an integer 'a' such that the congruence x^2 ≡ a (mod p) has a solution. If 'a' is not a quadratic residue, then no such 'x' exists. Tonelli's theorems offer a constructive method to find 'x' when it does exist.

The specific form of Tonelli's algorithm depends on the properties of the prime modulus. For instance, if the prime p is congruent to 3 modulo 4, there is a simpler formula to find the square roots.
