Toitevarustuksia, often translated as power supplies, are electrical devices that convert electric power from a source into the correct voltage, current, and alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) for a load. They are essential components in almost all electronic devices, providing the necessary energy for their operation.

Power supplies can be broadly categorized into linear and switching power supplies. Linear power supplies are known for their low noise and ripple, making them suitable for sensitive applications like audio equipment and laboratory instruments. However, they are less efficient and can be bulky. Switching power supplies, on the other hand, are significantly more efficient and compact. They operate by rapidly switching on and off, which reduces energy waste. This efficiency makes them ideal for a wide range of consumer electronics, computers, and industrial equipment.

Beyond these primary types, power supplies can also be classified by their output characteristics, such as regulated or unregulated, single-output or multi-output, and AC-to-DC or DC-to-DC converters. Regulated power supplies maintain a stable output voltage despite variations in input voltage or load. Unregulated power supplies are simpler and cheaper but offer less stable output. Multi-output power supplies provide several different voltage levels from a single unit, useful for complex systems. AC-to-DC converters are the most common, transforming wall outlet power into usable DC power for electronics, while DC-to-DC converters are used to step up or step down existing DC voltages. The choice of power supply depends heavily on the specific requirements of the device it will power.
