Toitainetöötlemine, also known as nutrient processing, refers to the series of biological and chemical reactions that occur within an organism to extract, convert, and utilize nutrients from ingested food. This complex process begins with digestion, where food is broken down into smaller molecules. In animals, this involves mechanical breakdown in the mouth and stomach, followed by enzymatic digestion in the stomach and small intestine. These enzymes, such as amylase, protease, and lipase, break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into their constituent smaller units like glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids, respectively.

Once these smaller molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream, they are transported to cells throughout the body. Within the cells, further processing occurs. For instance, glucose can be used immediately for energy through cellular respiration, or it can be stored as glycogen for later use. Amino acids are used to synthesize new proteins, which are essential for building and repairing tissues, as well as for various cellular functions. Fatty acids are also utilized for energy, stored as triglycerides, or incorporated into cell membranes.

In plants, nutrient processing is largely external, involving the absorption of inorganic nutrients from the soil through their roots. These nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, are then transported to various parts of the plant and incorporated into organic molecules through photosynthesis and other metabolic pathways. This internal conversion and utilization of absorbed substances are crucial for growth, development, and reproduction in all living organisms. The efficiency of nutrient processing can significantly impact an organism's health and overall survival.
