Toisiovälittäjäaineita, often translated as secondary messengers, are intracellular molecules that are activated by primary signaling events and then amplify and relay the signal to downstream targets within the cell. These molecules play a crucial role in cellular communication and signal transduction pathways.

When a signal molecule, such as a hormone or neurotransmitter, binds to a receptor on the cell surface, it often triggers a cascade of events. This initial binding event is considered the primary signal. In many cases, this primary signal leads to the activation or production of a secondary messenger. Examples of common secondary messengers include cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), inositol trisphosphate (IP3), diacylglycerol (DAG), and calcium ions (Ca2+).

These secondary messengers then diffuse through the cytoplasm or are released into specific cellular compartments. They bind to and modulate the activity of various effector proteins, such as enzymes or ion channels. This modulation amplifies the original signal and can lead to a wide range of cellular responses, including changes in gene expression, metabolism, cell growth, or muscle contraction. The diverse array of secondary messengers and their specific downstream targets allow for complex and finely tuned cellular responses to external stimuli.
